River, play blue was filmed in November 2023. In it, Julia Rooney is filmed walking her painting, Bluescreen on a journey around The Brooklyn Army Terminal: a four-million square-foot building complex completed in 1919, and once used as a military depot and supply base. The building complex is now home to mixed-use industries, including the artist's studio. As Rooney walks along the grounds and the waterfront, historic images of the building sourced from The Brooklyn Public Library are inserted in place of Bluescreen, which is keyed-out (similar to how blue screens and green screens are in film productions). The painting—punctuated with holes and subject to plays of light—is only partially keyed-out, creating the effect of a screen that toggles between past and present realities of the Brooklyn Army Terminal.
